TAR UC Holds Forum on Artificial Intelligence

A segment of the audience listening intently to the speakers.

In conjunction with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) 50th Anniversary celebration, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (‘FOET’) together with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Institution of Engineering and Technology (‘IET’), Institution of Mechanical Engineers and IEEE’s Computational Intelligence Society organised an insightful forum with the theme “The AI Paradigm Shift: Destructive or Constructive?” at TAR UC Kuala Lumpur Main Campus in Setapak on 16 March 2019 to look at some of the issues and concerns pertinent to Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’).

Close to 160 participants consisting of students, academicians, IET members, and experts from the engineering field attended the forum to get insights on the impact of AI in various fields and how to prepare and adapt themselves for the integration of AI. A panel of four speakers – namely Ir Dr Karl Ng Kah Hou, Director of Data Economy from Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, Mr Juarez Salih Lowe, CEO of VROC Artificial Intelligence, Assoc Prof Dr Chan Chee Seng from the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, University of Malaya, and Assistant Prof Pang Jia Yew from the IET Malaysia Network, addressed the audience.

With a balanced representation from the government, engineering practitioners and academia, this forum provided an all-encompassing platform to discuss the potentials of AI as well as clear myths and fear towards AI. The question-and-answer session also allowed participants to voice their questions about AI and gain better understanding on AI from the input of the panel speakers.

It was also an eye-opening event for TAR UC’s engineering students, who had the opportunity to learn more about the subject matter and network with some of the leading experts in the industry in this forum.

To ensure TAR UC’s engineering programmes are keeping abreast of the latest development in science and technology, all FOET final year Degree students are to undertake a mandatory paper on AI and FOET staff are also constantly in touch and working together with industry partners on AI-related projects.
