(31 August 2015, Monday) The top 50 local innovations that have made an impact on our everyday lives will be showcased in a roving exhibition throughout Singapore in the coming months. Titled “Innovati50n”, it is part of the year-long Science@50 campaign — an initiative by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), NUS, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University, and Singapore University of Technology and Design — which celebrates 50 years of Singapore innovation through science and technology.

In a unique pairing of science and art, the innovations will be depicted through various art forms such as photography, painting, sculpture and digital art designed by students of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). The aim is to make science relatable to the masses.

One of those highlighted during a preview on 27 August was a canvas painting titled A Cyclical Lifestyle by Year 3 NAFA student Aditi Rao Venkatesh. The artwork shows a chessboard with scattered pieces, floating particles and a single chess piece with a human head symbolising the body as a battlefield defending against infections. It depicts the endotoxin-diagnostic and endotoxin-removal technology, developed and commercialised in 2000 and 2004 respectively, by Professor Ding Jeak Ling from the NUS Department of Biological Sciences and Associate Professor Ho Bow from the NUS Department of Microbiology. The award-winning technology is now used globally for quality assurance and in the preparation of injectable medications.
