The morning rays of 23 September 2020 bore witness to a significant occasion at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) Kuala Lumpur Main Campus in Setapak, where a tree-planting ceremony was conducted with the families of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and the late Tun Tan Siew Sin.

The families planted one rain tree (Samanea Saman) each in front of Bangunan Tun Tan Siew Sin, reenacting the historic moment that shaped and formed the then TAR College.

Named after the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who ceremoniously planted a tree during the ground breaking ceremony for the first permanent campus in Kuala Lumpur in 1973, TAR UC has been educating young Malaysians for over five decades with over 210,000 graduates passing through its doors.

Fast forward more than 4 decades later, the tree-planting ceremony was recreated by Tunku Muinuddin Putra and Datin Sri Sharifah Menyalara Hussein, grandchildren of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, and Tan Siok Eng, Datin Paduka Tan Siok Choo and Tan Siok Lee, daughters of the late Tun Tan Siew Sin. Both families also unveiled a plaque respectively to commemorate the occasion.

“My grandfather would have been so proud to know this institution has come so far; reaching its 50-year milestone with so many great achievements in fulfilling its promise to educate young Malaysians,” said Tunku Muinuddin Putra in his remark.

Datin Paduka Tan Siok Choo hopes the trees will remind and motivate TAR UC to continue the legacy her father left behind.

“TAR UC is a very special existence to our family because it was initiated by our late father to provide affordable education to all Malaysians.

“Like the resilient rain tree, we hope TAR UC’s Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, staff and students will continue to lend the values of TAR UC’s founding fathers and provide continuous shade to all in sunshine and thunderstorm.”

Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Chairman of the Board of Governors of TAR UC, paid tribute to Tun Tan Siew Sin and Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, crediting them for TAR UC’s progress and success.

“The newly planted trees will be memorable symbols, representing Tun Tan Siew Sin’s noble aspiration to provide quality tertiary education for Malaysians and TAR UC’s credibility to continue upholding the esteemed and respected name of Tunku Abdul Rahman.
