(14 September 2015, Monday and 10 September 2015, Thursday) 2,300 Mid-Autumn lanterns with a local touch lit up the streets of Chinatown, and thousands of members of the public thronged the streets despite the haze, to reminisce on the progress of our country in 50 years. The annual light up festival will run from 13 September to 12 October. Ten second-year and final-year students from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, were invited by the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee to participate this year for the designs. Since May, they have been working with 40 experts from China on the production of the lanterns, and completed the job in 4 months.

Kenneth Yip Cheng Kit, 23, is one of the participating students. He said that while searching for inspiration, he went to do a lot of research on Singapore, and found out a lot about Singapore’s history during the process. He also got emotional when he saw his works on display at Chinatown.

The most eye-catching display would be the large colourful Merlion, measuring 12m tall and 6m wide, adorned by the national flower Vanda Miss Joakim and the Aranda Lee Kuan Yew. It is located at the junction of Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road and Upper Cross Street.

The article goes on to emphasize that there was still a huge turnout despite the haze, and the displays are something that many people look forward to every year.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam was present to launch the event. Several ministers such as Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Chan Chun Sing and Sam Tan were also present at the event. DPM said that the Mid-Autumn festival is something that everyone gets involved in. And that is something really unique about Singapore, and we must deepen this as we go forward.
