Kin Lek Chew is the Founder of Hide & Seeds Production, a CG production house which focuses on TV commercials and TV series. Having graduated from The One Academy’s Digital Animation course in 2012, Kin kicked off his career in the creative industry by working as a 3D Modeler at various companies. During his time there, he had worked on many exciting projects in which he was involved in character, props modelling, game assets development and more. This allowed him to hone his skills and gain insight on how the animation industry works.

Following this, he then returned to his alma mater to pursue a part-time career in teaching where he lectured on 3D Modeling and Maya Essential Course. His time and experience in the working world allowed him to help develop the institute’s education syllabus to ensure students not only gain knowledge but are also able to enhance their skillset according to industry standards. At the same time, Kin founded Hide and Seeds Production. In 2019, him and his team entered the Digital Content Creators Challenge (DC3) and emerged as one of the winners of the competition.

The DC3 is a platform for local talents to hone their creativity and ability to develop new content ideas. Its main aim is to help accelerate the development and commercialisation of these concepts and transform them into world-class digital content. Organised by MDEC, this initiative seeks to boost the nation’s digital creative industry, which includes animations, movies and video games which are seeing a significant growth locally.

Kin and team’s victory have led to them winning a whopping RM90,000 as grant money to fund their own IP. Besides that, they also won unlimited access to MSC Malaysia Animation and Creative Content Centre (MAC3) and consultancy from industry heavyweights. The MAC3 is a content accelerator personalized to those who are looking to stand out in the global creative content sphere. The MAC3 hubs seeks to facilitate collaboration and support between small and medium animation startups in order to accelerate their businesses.

The experience itself was priceless to Kin who described his journey in the competition to be an eye-opener. In a post on Hide and Seed’s Facebook, he thanked the organisers for the opportunity to showcase their work and for the feedback, advice, support and insight from the industry gurus. He also expressed gratitude to fellow teammates and reminded the public to stay tuned for the release of their completed project.

With the local digital content market growing, there is now a great need for content creators. Sectors such as animation, VFX, games, interactive media, new media and more are paving the way for creatives to reach success locally and internationally making it no better time than now to venture into them.
