Miri – 1 September 2015 – There will be literally something for everyone at the Open Day of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) this 26 September 2015. While families, working adults and students of all ages take in attractions like the Innovation Expo, Future Students Booth and other showcases, children will get to revel in fun activities at the event’s Kiddies Corner.

A perennial highlight since the first Open Day in 2006, the Kiddies Corner has gained even greater popularity in recent years since it moved into the air-conditioned comfort of the university’s Recreation and Event Centre in 2010 and stage performances, a colouring competition and other attractions were added.

Riding on the popularity of Pixar’s hit animated movie ‘Minions’, the Kiddies Corner this year will feature the adorable, single-celled yellow organisms in many of its activities. For a start, there will be a Minion mascot that will accompany the children for most of the day.

Children aged four to six years can look forward to participating in the Minion Colouring Contest offering attractive prizes. Children who wish to participate are required to bring their own colouring materials. It will commence at 1 pm following registration at 12.30 pm.

A telematch for children aged seven to nine years will be organised concurrently with the colouring contest from 1 pm to 3.30 pm. It will comprise a Father-and-Son and Mother-and-Daughter Three-legged Race, and ‘Unique Connection’, ‘Pin the Eyes on The Minion’ and ‘Minion Target’ games. There will be a 30-minute break between each activity for prize giving.

According to Danny Atok, chairperson of the Kiddies Corner sub-committee, the Kiddies Corner will also feature a Bumblebee mascot, which should be of particular interest to the boys, as well as a bouncy castle, selfie corner, and face painting booth. She also stated that participation in the Kiddies Corner is free of charge.

There will also be a booths operated by Pustaka Miri, Aina’s Fav Treats and Love Fun Kids Early Learning Centre.

“Another attraction will be an escape room by The Escape Room here in Miri, a first for the Kiddies Corner,” added Danny. “Each player will be charged RM5 to take part and the proceeds will go to charity, namely the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society.”

All the Kiddies Corner activities are scheduled to end by 4 pm, allowing the children and their parents to visit other showcases and activities at the Open Day.

Other highlights of the Open Day are the Innovation Expo, Future Students’ Booth, Charity & Community Corner, free health screenings, and wide range of food and beverage stalls operated by student clubs and local hotels and eateries. There will also be para-gliding and radio-controlled boat, car and aircraft demonstrations, showcases of traditional games, a big bike exhibition and stage performances.

The Open Day will be from 10 am to 5 pm and is open to the public. Next to its graduation ceremonies, the Open Day is the most anticipated annual event at Curtin Sarawak. It is a chance for everyone to explore its campus, learn about the courses it offers, speak to lecturers and current students, participate in various activities and have lots of fun.

Thousands of people throng the campus for the Open Day each year, and last year, close to 10,000 visitors attended – the largest crowd ever. Visitors to the event can purchase Open Day Door Gift & Lucky Draw tickets at RM5 on the day to redeem attractive door gifts and be eligible to win lucky draw prizes that include bicycles, TVs, smartphones, electronic goods and branded wristwatches. Proceeds from the sale of the tickets will go to charity.
