Miri – 23 September 2015 – The annual Open Day of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) this Saturday will feature a number of interesting showcases including radio control boat races, demonstrations of radio control buggies, drift cars and aircraft, and powered para-gliding.

The Miri Radio Control Club (MRCC) is supporting the event by organising a radio control boat race that will see competitors from Miri and surrounding areas, as well as from Brunei, racing their boats on the large lake in the university campus from 10 am to 5 pm. They will also be showcasing radio control aircraft, buggies and drift cars from 10 am to 3 pm.

From 3 pm onwards, members of the Miri Paramotor Club will take to the skies above the campus in a demonstration of powered para-gliding, which is a relatively new sport in Miri and should be quite a spectacle for visitors to the event.

This year’s Curtin Sarawak Open Day is the university’s ninth and will take place from 10 am to 5 pm. It is the university’s most anticipated annual event and is the public’s chance to explore its campus, learn about courses it offers, participate in activities, and generally have lots of fun. As in previous years, large crowds are expected. Close to 10,000 people attended last year.

The event will also feature a number of perennial attractions, including an Innovation Expo showcasing various aspects of teaching and learning and research at the university’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Business and Humanities, Graduate School and Curtin Sarawak Research Institute.

There will also be the Future Students Booth where interested students can enquire about tertiary studies at Curtin Sarawak, a Kiddies Corner where children can enjoy fun activities from 10 am to 4pm, and a Charity & Community Corner showcasing over 20 local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government agencies.

Over 20 NGOs and government agencies will participate in the Charity & Community Corner.

They will be joined by government agencies like the Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan, the Health Department’s Mobile Dental Clinic, Miri Hospital, Pharmacy Enforcement, as well as healthcare providers like Columbia Hospital Miri and TAGS Spine & Joint Specialists.

This is in addition to over 50 booths operated by student clubs and staff of Curtin Sarawak to promote their activities and sell all manner of food and beverages, as well as over 20 local business entities to promote their products and services.

Another popular attraction will be the campus’ Melanau Tibou, which is being featured for the third year from 2 pm to 5 pm. Visitors can attempt the traditional sport involving a death-defying 30-foot high swing and leaping from a high bamboo scaffolding to catch a swinging rope as it reaches the height of its arc.

The university’s student council is organising a variety of stage performances and activities, including the widely-anticipated Mr & Ms Curtin contest and a series of lucky draws offering attractive prizes like flatscreen TVs, smartphones and tablets, mountain bikes, branded wristwatches, as well as movie passes, hotel and shopping vouchers.

Visitors are required to purchase tickets at RM5 to be eligible to participate in the lucky draws as well as redeem attractive door gifts. The tickets will be available at the Ticket Sales & Door Gift Booth and proceeds from the sale of tickets will go to charity.
