Curtin Malaysia holding graduation and award ceremonies on 22 April

Over 580 Curtin Malaysia students to graduate with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees on 22 April.

Miri – 18 April 2017 – Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is holding its annual graduation and award ceremonies this 22 April 2017. Over 580 students will graduate from various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and 82 will receive awards of excellence from the university and corporate sponsors.

There will be two separate graduation ceremonies – a combined ceremony for the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities in the morning, and another for the Faculty of Engineering and Science in the afternoon. Both will be held at the university’s Recreation and Event Centre.

248 students of the Faculty of Business will receive Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce degrees, and two will receive master’s degrees in accounting and economics and finance.

A further 58 students of the Faculty of Humanities will receive undergraduate degrees in mass communication and postgraduate qualifications in policy sciences and project management.

Meanwhile, 257 students of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will graduate with bachelor’s degrees in engineering, science and technology, alongside 17 postgraduate students graduating with master’s and doctoral degrees in chemical, mechanical, electrical and petroleum engineering.

Attending the ceremonies will be a delegation from Curtin University’s main campus in Perth headed by Chancellor Colin Beckett and including university council member Michael Lishman, Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Seth Kunin.

Representing the Malaysian campus will be Pro-Chancellor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan; Chairman of Curtin Malaysia Datu Ose Murang; Chair of the Curtin Malaysia Management Board Datuk Dr Lee Kim Shin; Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski; and members of the Curtin Malaysia Council.

In the evening, the award ceremony will take place at Miri Marriott Resort and Spa. The dinner event will see students being recognised for academic excellence, outstanding extracurricular activities and community service.

Among the award sponsors are ACCA Malaysia, Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers, Bintulu Development Authority, CPA Australia, Crowe Horwath, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Institution of Engineers Malaysia (Miri Branch), Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, O’Connor’s Engineering and SIRIM Measurements Technology.

They also include MJM (Palm Oil Mill), Polar Light, Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS), Samling Group of Companies, Sarawak Higher Education Foundation, Sarawak Shell Berhad, Shin Yang Group of Companies, Wan Ullok Jugah Chin & Co. Advocates, Yayasan Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Datuk Dr Lee Kim Shin and Vantage Productions.

This year’s graduation and award events coincide with Curtin University’s 50th year since its days as the Western Australia Institute of Technology (WAIT), established to provide professionally oriented courses relevant to the needs of an ambitious and growing Western Australian economy.

In 1987, WAIT evolved into Curtin University, but the character of the institution remained one of innovation, engagement and inclusion, traits that are core to the sophisticated global university it is today. In 1999, Curtin established Curtin Malaysia, its first and currently its largest international campus, in collaboration with the Sarawak state government.

Curtin University is now recognised as being among the top two per cent in the world, and as the university which has progressed more rapidly in major international rankings than any other Australian institution in recent years. Curtin Malaysia offers the same courses and an undifferentiated learning experience as its Australian parent and degrees earned at the Malaysian campus are conferred by the main campus.
